My Kids and I have enjoyed the book, The one and only Ivan, and have read it multiple times over the past few years. Disney did an excellent job of staying true to the book and adding that element of Disney flare. Being a Disney+ title, no expense seemed to spared on both cinematography and cast. The onscreen effects of the animals was truly amazing.
Casting was superb. I don't think anyone could have played a better Mac that the one and only Bryan Cranston. Sam Rockwell shined as Ivan, and the true Disney magic came from Ron Funches, Helen Mirren and most importantly Danny DeVito, who voices as supporting characters really brought a comedic aspect to the movie (that wasn't present from the book.
The movie comes off as a comedy, but the older the child, the more they will grasp the darker elements of animal cruelty addressed somewhat in the movie, making the movie adaptable for any age. All my four kids (ages 4-12) enjoyed this film, as well as us adults. It was all laughs for the 4 and 6 year old, and a few cases of "happy" tears from the adults.
One general criticism seems to be that the story isn't true to the real Ivan, however this a loosely based story, that was written as a kids book and ultimately translated into a feel-good Disney movie, so I expected it to be more of a sunshine and rainbows "feel good comedy" than a documentary of a gorilla in captivity. It does this while still shedding like on the ethical practices of animals in captivity.
Great addition to the Disney plus line up for both kids and adults.
